Mikami, the "human rental agent," plays various roles according to clients' needs. From wedding proxy attendance to apology proxies, even playing the role of "family." This film depicts the stories of three families who use human rental services in an omnibus format, centered around Mikami.

Single mother Tomoko raises her only daughter Sakura while working as a freelance designer. Pained by the absence of a father figure, Tomoko hires a rental father from a human rental service she found online. Though initially hesitant, Sakura soon looks forward to Mikami's monthly visits as the ideal father. Then, Tomoko's ex-husband Matsunaga suddenly reappears.

Mikami is overwhelmed with various assignments daily: wedding proxy attendance, apology proxies, social media lifestyle proxies, media appearances. While busy, he works alongside Yamamoto, a cameraman doing a documentary. After more than six months, Mikami begins regularly visiting the home of his client Masami Horiuchi as a proxy father. But as Masami's usage frequency increases and her finances start to change, Mikami senses something is wrong.
Filmed in mockumentary style. Critics praised Episode 2 as "outstandingly well-made."

Nanako, an excellent student, attends a prestigious school. Her mother Yumiko, who worked tirelessly at part-time jobs day and night, suddenly collapses and passes away. In the midst of her grief, Nanako goes through the wake and funeral with Mikami, the father who came home once a month. But then, Mikami makes an unexpected confession.
"I'm not your real father by blood."
Many audience members reported "crying through Episode 3." Yua Shiraishi's performance was highly praised.
Office scenes were filmed at the actual Family Romance office of original author Yuichi Ishii.

In modern times, where diversity in lifestyles and family structures should be the norm, the deep-seated Japanese psychology of feeling ashamed when you deviate from "normal" and caring about appearances rises to the surface.
The three-part story structure is very engaging, and the mockumentary-style Part 2 is outstandingly well-made and entertaining.

My heart ached in Episode 1 and I cried my eyes out in Episode 3. Maybe it hit me so hard because I'm a parent now.
Shun Shiotani was perfect for the rental company role, and Yua Shiraishi gave it her all in the final episode as the daughter. I couldn't stop thinking about the current state of the industry and each character's future.
"I'm not your real father by blood." These words are repeated throughout the film. What does a "real father" mean? Step-families aren't connected by blood. Adoptive families aren't either. But many of them are truly "family."
