Founder & CEO
CEO of Family Romance / Actor / The Human Rental Shop
I want to expand services that fill the gaps in an unequal society.
I am Yuichi Ishii. "Family Romance," our company name, comes from a term coined by the psychoanalyst Freud, referring to a child's fantasy of an ideal family.
In simple terms, the proxy and stand-in attendance business provides rental people to those who need someone to take their place. Today, there are 250,000 divorces per year in Japan. That's one divorce every two minutes.
For various reasons, we temporarily lend family members to single-mother and single-father households. Ideally, this kind of work shouldn't need to exist. But that's not the world we live in. Unfortunately, a society that needs fabricated families does exist. Our company was founded with the desire to help as many of these people as possible.
Having served as a rental father in various households, there are currently 35 children across 23 families who believe I am their real father. Through this work, I feel the importance of human connections and filling the gaps in society every day.

At age 27, after working in the welfare, advertising, and IT industries, he founded Family Romance Inc., specializing in proxy and stand-in attendance services. He pioneered unprecedented services such as family proxy, friend rental, rental boyfriend/girlfriend, and social media lifestyle proxy.
The idea was sparked in 2004 when an acquaintance, a single mother, shared her struggles. Her earnest wish for "a father for my child" inspired the concept of a proxy service specializing in family rental.
In the early days, public awareness of proxy services was low and credibility was lacking. While personally working as a proxy in the field, Yuichi Ishii cooperated with hundreds of media outlets across all formats, raising awareness of the entire proxy industry and spreading the reality of how it fills gaps in modern society worldwide.
Major Media Appearances
Selected as one of the year's most notable companies for Fuji TV's year-end program "Moukaru Journal Miyane-shiki," appearing on television alongside the president of Seijo Ishii and other business leaders.
In March 2018, an article by American writer Roc Morin was published in The Atlantic, attracting worldwide attention. This article caught the eye of director Werner Herzog, leading to the film adaptation.
Lecture Theme: "Japan's Proxy Industry and Modern Society"
At age 36, he was invited to Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts, to speak at the "Harvard Global Health & Leadership Conference 2019." This was the first full-scale academic lecture by a Japanese person on proxy and stand-in attendance services.
Lecture Topics
The lecture presented content linking the psychological backgrounds of actual clients and staff training philosophy to Japanese society, based on past case studies. It earned high praise for discussing the social significance of proxy services at the world's top university.
Published a book compiling episodes from his extensive experience playing various roles as a proxy in the field. The book explores why clients make their requests and how their lives changed through Ishii's proxy work, linking the struggles of both sides to modern society.

Learn moreDirected by German master filmmaker Werner Herzog, the film is based on episodes Yuichi Ishii experienced in the field. It premiered at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival in May 2019 in the non-competition section (special screening).
Film Information
The story of a daughter who believes Ishii is her real father resonated with audiences worldwide. The film has been highly praised as a unique work that blurs the line between reality and fiction.
Behind the Scenes
The director's method was remarkably innovative: there was no script. At each location, the scene concept was conveyed, and actors improvised based on their instincts. Herzog's genius shines in casting the non-actor Ishii as the lead.
Although initially overwhelmed with surprise, emotion, and anxiety (causing stomach pains), Ishii later realized that the director had been putting into practice what Ishii had told him during his visit to Japan: "In the real proxy business, there's no script on-site. Staff must act on their own intuition."

I asked Mr. Ishii to listen to my complaints. I had been under a lot of stress from work and relationships, and while I would have liked to talk to friends, I was afraid of being disliked if I kept complaining. Mr. Ishii was very friendly and easy to talk to, so I was able to let out a lot of my frustrations (laugh). I'd like to try other proxy services next time.
— Woman in her 30s, office worker
After being betrayed by an ex-boyfriend, I developed a fear of men and had been avoiding all interactions with the opposite sex. As I got older, I started panicking that I would never get married. When I found out on Twitter that I could rent Mr. Yuichi Ishii, I requested a rental husband to simulate married life. Mr. Ishii was incredibly attentive as a husband, and his natural demeanor made me feel at ease. I was able to enjoy the time without feeling nervous at all. I feel like I can look forward to the future now. Thank you so much.

Yes, you can request Yuichi Ishii by name. However, this is limited to assignments where only Ishii alone is requested. For example, if you order 20 people for an audience proxy at a live event, Ishii cannot be included among them. Also, services where the client is not present on-site, such as shopping proxies, are not available.
Generally yes, as long as the service is for your own personal use. However, we do not accept requests that involve illegal activities or anything that goes against common sense and decency.
